How to Check for your Individual TIN (Tax Identification Number) Online

Little did many Nigerians know that every one that is of taxable age and has obtained either BVN (Bank Verification number) or NIN (National Identification Number) has been allotted a Tax Identification Number (TIN) by the Nigerian government.

The tax identification number (TIN) is a unique identifier for an individual or a company for the specific purpose of tax remittance and it is issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

As a business or individual, TIN is important because that is what shows that you are a registered taxpayer in Nigeria, and as you know that tax payment is made compulsory, every company, business, an individual must have their own unique tax identification number.

Follow the steps below to check your personal Tax Identification Number (TIN)

  1. Visit https://tinverification.jtb.gov.ng/ on your PC or Mobile
  2. Choose your Date of Birth.
  3. Pick a search parameter from the dropdown menu (TIN or NIN )
  4. BVN or Registered Phone Number
  5. Provide the appropriate value based on the search criteria in Step 2 above
  6. Confirm you are not a robot by checking the reCAPTCHA Box
  7. Click on the Search button

I don’t have a TIN… What to do?

The following requirements apply to persons seeking the TIN number whose business has not been dully documented with the Commission on Corporate Affairs (CAC):

  • A valid document of identification used to verify. These documents can be a national drivers ‘ licence, international passport, national identity number (NIN) or staff identification card.
  • A copy of the completed TIN registration form.

For Companies:

  • Registration certificate of the business name (for company or business) or Registered company certification (for a company) indicating the registration number.
  • The following documents: the day the business began, the current location of the company and the principal place from where the business operates.
  • A copy of the completed TIN registration form.

You need to update the TIN obtained by the tax office after you have provided the above as either a person or an organization at the tax service. Here you need only your registered phone number and your valid e-mail address, which you used for registration.

Why you should have a Tax Identification Number (TIN)

TIN is very essential whether you are a business owner or a citizen because it shows that you are a registered and confirmed taxpayer in Nigeria because paying tax in Nigeria is mandatory in accordance with the law.

Cost of Applying for TIN

If you put up the application yourself, it is absolutely free to apply for TIN. There are no charges unless you applied through a third party, you register for the TIN or incur any tax fine based on the timeframe provided to have your TIN. The same goes for both individuals and organizations.
