How to make Shawarma in Nigeria
Shawarma is a Middle Eastern delicacy that was imported into Nigerian by the Lebanese. Today, Shawarma as it is popularly called is now popular on Nigerian streets. Although it is considered a delicacy to the Middle Eastern society, here in Nigeria shawarma is a snack due to its availability on every street corner.
The snack or delicacy consists of well-seasoned meat which is then shaved and mixed with different kinds of vegetables. It is then spread on flour and rolled into a flatbread. Shawarma mostly consists of meat, but not all meat is used in the preparation of shawarma. Some of the meat used in shawarma preparation include Turkey, chicken, lamb, etc.
The recipe for the preparation of shawarma is widely sorted after in Nigeria since it is ideal for events, functions, etc. In this article, we will be looking at the exact and easy means of preparing shawarma in your homes or for public use.
Ingredients for preparing Shawarma in Nigeria [4 servings]
2 slices of Pita bread, 2 chicken Thighs or Chicken laps (de-boned/boneless) (You can also use de-boned/boneless beef), 2 Chicken Breasts (de-boned/boneless), 1 small cabbage (cut into thin strips), 3 medium-sized carrots (cut into thin strips), 1 Onion (cut into thin strips), Ketchup, 2 big tomatoes (cut into thin strips), 1 large cucumber (cut into thin strips and circles), Mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon of Vegetable or Olive oil for frying.
Ingredients Needed For The Marinade Of Your Choice
1 teaspoon of thyme, 2 teaspoons curry, 1 teaspoon garlic powder/2 teaspoons minced onions, Salt to taste (optional because the stock cube already contains salt), 1 Tablespoon Vegetable /Olive oil, Chilli pepper to taste, half a teaspoon of black pepper, salt, 1 large chicken stock cube.
Preparation of Nigerian Shawarma
Wash and cut all the vegetables into thin strips and put them in a separate bowl or plate. Cut the beef or chicken as well into thin strips and put in a separate plate or bowl.
Place the chicken or beef strips into a bowl, add marinade and then mix thoroughly and properly until they are well mixed. Cover the mixture properly and then store in a fridge for two (2) to twenty-four (24) hours.
Take a pan and then heat up a tablespoon of oil with the pan. Add the marinaded chicken/beef and stir fry properly in the pan until the chicken looks brown and juicy.
Mix up some Mayonnaise and Ketchup properly together. Then place a shawarma bread or pita on a clean board or any flat clean surface available and cut into two equal sizes (if you’re using a large Pita bread). If you’re using a very flat bread or tortilla wraps, spread the mixture of mayonnaise and ketchup on it and then pour some sliced vegetables on one end.
Sprinkle some chilli pepper, fold the bread, tuck the edge and then roll to form a wrap of shawarma. That’s it easy isn’t it?!
