Omoyele Sowore is a well-known writer, blogger, and human rights activist in Nigeria. He is also a lecturer, pro-democracy campaigner and founder of Sahara Reporters- a popular news agency which operates online.

Omoyele Sowore’s Early Life

He was born into a polygamous home in Niger Delta on February 16th, 1971 which makes him 48 years but he originally hails from Ondo State in Nigeria.

Sowore Educational Background

He attended the University of Lagos and in the year 1995, he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Planning.

During his stay in school, he was expelled twice due to student activism and reasons that has to do with politics.

He was the SUG president of his school from the year 1992-1994. He was so deeply engaged in the movement against Cultism ad corruption.

In the year 1999, the activist Sowore traveled out of Nigeria in order to get medical treatment in New York and he also stayed back in order to run his master’s program.

After this, at Columbia University, he earned a Masters’s degree in public administration in the year 2003.

He is presently married to his lover and their marriage is blessed with the fruits of the womb.

The Starting Of Sahara Reporters

In the year 2006, Sowore commenced Sahara Reporters within the space of a small room in Manhattan. He started the news website in order to be able to stand against the government’s corrupt actions.

Sahara Reporters enjoys back up from the Ford Foundation and Omidyar Foundation through good financial support. The company does not receive offers for advert and financial help from the government in Nigeria – this is a unique policy of the company.

Sowore In Politics

In the year 2018, on the 25th of February, Sowore declared his intention to run for the Presidential Seat during the 2019 elections. After this declaration, he organized a political party named the African Action Congress (AAC).

Eventually, on the 6th of October, the Political party had it’s National Convention, and Sowore became the Presidential Candidate for the party.

As soon as he became ACC’s presidential candidate he went on a journey around the World in order to gather finances for his campaign.

He commenced the tour from Nigeria visiting nearly all the states in Nigeria. While on his journey, he came in contact with the famous Professor Woke Soyinka and the Emir of Kano. He also visited the United Kingdom, the United State Of America and Australia.

Though Sahara Reporter Boss did not eventually emerge winner of the 2019 presidential election, yet he had a sum of 33,953 votes making the third most voted presidential candidate on the long list.

It appears Sowore may not be giving up on his Political dreams just yet, Sowore declared a protest which took place in August 2019. He tagged the protest: Revolution Days Of Rage.

Omoyele Sowore who has led several protests in times past seems to have a burning passion for good and fair Governance, he seems not to be discouraged nor bothered about his arrest and torture. His fight for democracy seems to be a deep passion that cannot be quenched.
