YouTube was created by three former employees of PayPal – Steve Chen, Jawed Karim, and Chad Hurley in February 2005. Chen and Karim both studied computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana, while Hurley graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The trio is among the highest-paid programmers in the world.
The initial idea was making YouTube an online video dating site but with difficulties faced in getting enough dating videos, they improvised and decided to make it a general video sharing site.
www.youtube.com was activated as a domain name on 14th February 2005, while development and publishing were done in the subsequent months.
YouTube started as a venture capital-funded technology startup, between November 2005 and April 2006 had their budget mainly from an 11.5 million investment by Sequoia Capital and also $8 million from Artis Capital Management.
The first YouTube video featured on this platform showed co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo with elephants behind him and the video was titled “Me at the Zoo” which presently has 78 million views and over 3 million comments.
After several beta testing, YouTube was officially launched in December 2005, and the first video to get over a million views was a Nike commercial and in 2011 Psy’s music video “Gangnam Style” broke the record as the first video the hit 1 billion views.

Sergey Brin’s net worth is over $52.1 billion and is the ninth richest man in the world.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin met in 1995 when he (Bring) toured Page around Stanford University, Brin was a second-year graduate student at that time while the page was still considering applying there.
